CCNA 200-125 Exam: HSRP Questions With Answers

Question 1. Which protocol advertises a virtual IP address to facilitate transparent failover of a Cisco routing device?
A. FHRP
B. DHCP
C. RSMLT
D. ESRP

Answer: A
Explanation: Primary mission of HSRP (Hot Standby Routing Protocol) is providing a redundant default gateway for end stations. However, it can also be used to provide load balancing. Many end stations allow only a single default gateway. Normally, this makes these hosts totally dependent on one router when communicating with all nodes off the local subnet. To avoid this limitation, HSRP provides a mechanism to allow this single IP address to be shared by two or more routers.

Question 2. Which protocol is the Cisco proprietary implementation of FHRP?
A. HSRP
B. VRRP
C. GLBP
D. CARP

Answer: A (in fact GLBP is also correct)
Explanation: Both HSRP and GLBP are Cisco Proprietary implementation of FHRP. VRRP is open standard (RFC5798)

Question 3. Which standards-based First Hop Redundancy Protocol is a Cisco supported alternative to Hot Standby Router Protocol?
A. VRRP
B. GLBP
C. TFTP
D. DHCP

Answer: A
Explanation: VRRP is open standard protocol and defined in RFC3768 https://tools.ietf.org/html/rfc3768 . GLBP and HSRP are Cisco proprietary. TFTP is used to transfer files between two Network Devices. DHCP dynamically allocates IP addresses to the Network devices.

Question 4. What are two requirements for an HSRP group? (Choose two)
A. exactly one active router
B. one or more standby routers
C. one or more backup virtual routers
D. exactly one standby active router
E. exactly one backup virtual router

Answer: A, B
Explanation:
A. exactly one active router: Only one Active Router per HSRP group will be elected based on highest priority. In case of equal priority, Highest IP address will be elected as Active Router.
B. one or more standby routers : There can be one or more Standby Routers.
C, D And E are incorrect: Wrong terminology.

Question 5. Which three options are the HSRP states for a router? (Choose three)
A. initialize
B. learn
C. secondary
D. listen
E. speak
F. primary

Answer: B D E
Explanation:
Initial: This is the state at the start. This state indicates that HSRP does not run. This state is entered through a configuration change or when an interface first becomes available.
Learn: The router has not determined the virtual IP address and has not yet seen an authenticated hello message from the active router. In this state, the router still waits to hear from the active router.
Listen: The router knows the virtual IP address, but the router is neither the active router nor the standby router. It listens for hello messages from those routers.
Speak: The router sends periodic hello messages and actively participates in the election of the active and/or standby router. A router cannot enter speak state unless the router has the virtual IP address.
Standby: The router is a candidate to become the next active router and sends periodic hello messages. With the exclusion of transient conditions, there is, at most, one router in the group in standby state.
Active: The router currently forwards packets that are sent to the group virtual MAC address. The router sends periodic hello messages. With the exclusion of transient conditions, there must be, at most, one router in active state in the group.

Question 6. Which standards-based First Hop Redundancy Protocol is a Cisco supported alternative to Hot Standby Router Protocol?
A. VRRP
B. GLBP
C. TFTP
D. DHCP

Answer: A

Question 7. Which value to use in HSRP protocol election process?
A. interface
B. virtual IP address
C. priority
D. router ID

Answer: C
Explanation:
The priority field is used to elect the active router and the standby router for the specific group. In the case of an equal priority, the router with the highest IP address for the respective group is elected as active. Furthermore, if there are more than two routers in the group, the second highest IP address determines the standby router and the other router/routers are in the listen state.

Question 8. Which of the following is needed to be enable back the role of active in HSRP?
A. preempt
B. priority
C. other options
D. other options

Answer: A
Explanation:
Using HSRP Preempt, you can ensure that a particular router is always selected as the HSRP active router if it is available.

Question 9. What is new in HSRPv2?
A. preempt
B. a greater number in hsrp group field
C. other
D. other

Answer: B
