The UTMD_SSAMLIB_FAILURE message is reported into the system message file when the Unified Threat Management process (utmd) encountered an error while calling a function or from a callback of the ssamlib library. This article documents an approach to troubleshoot this problem.
Unified Threat Management is currently only supported on J-Series and SRX devices.
The UTMD_SSAMLIB_FAILURE message is logged each time the utmd process encounters an error while calling a function from the ssamlib library or from a callback of the library.
When the UTMD_SSAMLIB_FAILURE event occurs, a message similar to the following is reported:
UTMD_SSAMLIB_FAILURE: ssamlib call returned error : <error-message>
The message includes the error returned by the function call.
The cause is likely an issue with the utmd process or the ssamlib library.

Look for any related events that occurred at or just before the UTMD_SSAMLIB_FAILURE message.
Perform these steps:
- During a maintenance window, as it will impact transit traffic, try restarting the utmd process with the command: restart utmd. This command is a hidden command and must be typed out completely. For more information on restarting a process, refer to Restart a Junos Software Process.
- If the failure messages continue after restarting, open a case with your technical support representative to investigate the issue further.
