If you just want to find out if an element is contained in the list or not:
>>> li
[‘a’, ‘b’, ‘new’, ‘mpilgrim’, ‘z’, ‘example’, ‘new’, ‘two’, ‘elements’]

True
>>> ‘damn’ in li
False
